Drawing for national champions football part of Relay festivities

Alabama football fans can enter a drawing for a football signed by defensive members of the 1992 national championship team.

Nucor Steel is selling chances for the football as part of its record-breaking fundraising effort for this year's Relay for Life for the American Cancer Society.

The ball will be on display tonight in the Nucor tent at Founders Park. Tickets are $1 each or 15 tickets for $10.

Nucor is attempting to add to the $50,000 its team raised this year. It's the first team in state history to reach the $50,000 mark.

Overall, 49 teams are out to raise $203,250 this year in the 12-hour event that starts at 7 p.m. with a walk by cancer survivors. That money will be added to the $73,813 the Hartselle Relay for Life effort raised last weekend.

Like Nucor, many teams will attempt to raise money during the event with bake sales, carnival games, inflatable rides and drawings for prizes such as two GE refrigerators and a 20-inch television.

Relay for Life also will be selling luminaries ($5 for white bags and $25 for gold bags) that will be lined around the course and lit at 10 p.m. The luminaries can be dedicated in honor or memory of a cancer survivor or victim, and all names will be read aloud.
