Package causes stir at post office

SYLACAUGA (AP) — The small amount of foul-smelling fluid found leaking from a package at the Sylacauga post office turned out to battery acid.

The post office shut down for about an hour after the package, which contained a weather balloon with a corroded battery, was found. "The safety of our customers and employees is crucial, so we acted out of an abundance of caution," Larry Dingman, a spokesman with the Postal Service, said. "In a situation like that, we send in postal inspectors and the local authorities, just to be safe."
