Smith to speak at commencement

ATHENS — A member of
the Alabama Commission of Higher Edu-cation will be the keynote speaker for Athens State University’s spring commencement ceremony Friday.

The graduation will be at 7 p.m. at the Von Braun Center in Huntsville.

Approximately 650 students will march.

The guest speaker will be Missy Ming Smith, an Athens native who also serves as the director of information and community relations for the Madison County Commission.

Gov. Bob Riley appointed Smith to the commission in January.

Cramer worker coming to Athens

ATHENS — Residents who need help with federal government issues can meet with a member of U.S. Rep. Bud Cramer’s staff on Tuesday in Athens.

Peggy Allen Towns, a caseworker for Cramer, D-Huntsville, will be at the Community Corrections office from 1-4 p.m.

“My office can help those from North Alabama cut through the federal bureaucracy and ensure that those who qualify for certain services and program are receiving the support they deserve,” Cramer said.

Community Corrections is in the Crutcher Shopping Center at 410 S. Jefferson St.
