Summary of action in the Alabama Legislature

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) A summary of action in the Alabama Legislature on Tuesday, the 19th meeting day of the regular session:

HOUSE

  • Discussed but delayed voting on a $1.8 billion General Fund budget to give members more time to study the spending plan.

  • Passed bill to refinance up to $7.5 million in bonds to repair leaks and do other maintenance at the Alabama Judicial Building. Goes to Senate.

  • Passed a bill to spend $52.7 million in tobacco settlement money to fund programs that receive funds from the Children First Trust Fund. Goes to Senate.

    SENATE

  • Caught up with the introduction of bills that hadn't been introduced due to a week of stalling tactics.

  • Did not vote on any bills because of a dispute between the Democratic majority and Republican minority over which bills should be addressed.

    COMMITTEES

  • The House Health Committee voted to defeat a bill that would have set up a process to register and license midwives.

  • Senate Judiciary Committee meets at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday in room 727 of the Statehouse.

  • House Constitution and Elections Committee meets at 9 a.m. Wednesday in room 603 to consider a bill to require candidates to file campaign finance reports even if they don't have opposition.

  • House Government Operations Committee meets at 9 a.m. Wednesday in room 622.

  • House Judiciary Committee meets at 9 a.m. Wednesday in room 123.

  • House Public Safety Committee meets at 9 a.m. in room 602.

  • House Education Appropriations Committee meets at 9 a.m. in room 617.

  • Senate Finance and Taxation-Education Committee meets at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday in room 727.

  • House Health Committee meets at 10 a.m. Wednesday in the Joint Briefing Room.

  • Senate Finance and Taxation-General Fund Committee meets at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in room 727.

  • House Government Appropriations Committee meets at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday in room 617.

  • House Education Policy Committee meets at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday in room 602 to consider bill to require teaching of character education in public schools.

  • House Committee on Boards and Commissions meets at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday in room 601.

  • House County and Municipal Government Committee meets at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday.

  • House Tourism and Travel Committee meets at 1:30 p.m. in room 123.

  • Senate meets at 11 a.m. Thursday and House at 2:30 p.m.
