Council approves funds for athlete

PRICEVILLE — The Price-ville Town Council on Thursday went to bat for a track star.

The council approved $400 to help send Priceville High School freshman javelin thrower Mary O. Atchley to the Nike Outdoor National Track and Field Meet in Greensboro, N.C., in June.

In addition to her flight and meals — she will stay at the home of a friends family — Atchley will have to buy a new javelin, which costs $125.

Councilman Sam Heflin and Mayor Melvin Duran said they will donate another $100 each.

Councilman prefers bullets over chairs

PRICEVILLE — Priceville Town Councilman Tim Crow believes that more than $1,300 for four office chairs for the Police Department is too much.

So, Crow voted no Thursday on a motion to approve $1,315.80 for the chairs, which the town will get for $328.95 each on state bid. With Councilman Tommy Perry absent, the council voted 4-1 to buy the chairs.

I think its too expensive, Crow said after the meeting. Id rather buy bullets than chairs.

Mow grass, dont kill it, says mayor

PRICEVILLE — The Price-ville Town Council on Thursday approved by a 4-1 vote $554 to Agriliance for weed killer.

Mayor Melvin Duran cast the opposing vote, saying it would also kill grass. I dont like kil-ling the grass alongside ditches. It causes corrosion. Take a look along Bethel Road. Id rather mow the grass, he said.
