Boy falls, drowns on fishing outing

PHIL CAMPBELL (AP) — Divers have found the body of a Winston County teenager who apparently fell into a Franklin County creek while fishing.

Sheriff Larry Plott said members of the Franklin County Dive Team recovered the body of Anthony Burton Jr., 14, at about 11 a.m. Sunday.

Plott said Burton, who couldn't swim, apparently fell into the creek between 6 and 6:30 a.m. when he slipped on a ledge near the Cummings Creek Bridge, just east of Phil Campbell. Plott said the boy was with his stepfather and 12-year-old stepbrother on an overnight fishing trip.

Investigators said all three had been fishing on the eastern bank, but the two boys had walked across the bridge to get to the west creek bank to check a fishing line. Burton was reaching over to pull up the line when he slipped on the ledge and fell into the creek.

The stepfather, who was still on the other side of the creek, tried to swim to the boy and searched for him but the teen had gone underwater and couldn't be found.
