Somerville plans grand opening of park Saturday

SOMERVILLE — A ribbon-cutting and grand opening will be Saturday at the new 3.5-acre Somerville-Corr Wireless Celebration Park. The event will be from 10 a.m. until noon.

The park is on Franklin Street off Alabama 67, across from the post office and next to Somerville Historical Cemetery.

Mayor Ray Long said the communications company, headquartered in Oneonta, donated the property to the city in October 2004.

He said when Jack's Family Restaurant at Somerville decided to transform its playground into a picnic area, the restaurant gave the playground equipment — worth about $25,000 — to Somerville to use in the park.

Also, Long said, Morgan County District 4 Commissioner Stacy George had workers install drainage pipes and put down gravel in the driveway.

The mayor said Corr Wireless will provide hot dogs and other refreshments and give prizes.
