Storm shelters for Somerville

SOMERVILLE — The Somerville Town Council on Monday approved purchasing three community storm shelters from Safe-T-Shelter of Danville.

Mayor Ray Long said the town hopes to cover a major portion of the $65,000 cost through matching 75/25 grants from the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Somerville would pay the 25 percent match.

Safe-T-Shelter's Robert Mitchell said each shelter will seat about 100 people.

Long said the town hopes to install one shelter near the Cross Creek subdivision on Bluff City Road. He said the town will place the other two on land off Broad Street adjoining the library property.
