Rock, gospel music coming to Athens

ATHENS — Rock out in Athens on Friday, or get to toe tapping to Irish tunes or clap along to favorite gospel songs.

Singing on the Square starts at 6:30 p.m. in downtown with three acts that perform different styles of music.

James Smith, the Autoharp Man, will perform from 6:30 to 7. He plays traditional Irish, Scottish and Welsh songs.

The Lanny Rose Band will play Southern rock from 7 to 7:45. The Limestone County band has donated three of their songs to Arrowhead Film and Production for use in a new movie called “In the Shadow of the Blade,” which focuses on the Huey helicopter’s role in Vietnam.

Old Time Christians will entertain with gospel songs from 7:45 to 8:30. Performers from North Alabama and Middle Tennessee comprise the group.

The event is free. Bring a lawn chair or blanket. Downtown restaurants will be open.
