A woman underwent surgery Wednesday after stabbing herself with a samurai sword, Decatur police said.

The injured woman, Elizabeth K. Toledo, 41, was found by her brother, who lives next door to her in a duplex at 1501 Jackson St. S.E. at about 12:30 p.m., police said.

Lt. Chris Mathews, a police spokesman, said Toledo apparently stabbed herself with a four-foot samurai sword, which went all the way through her torso.

An ambulance took her to Decatur General Hospital, where doctors were performing exploratory surgery Wednesday afternoon, Mathews said.

It was not known exactly when or why Toledo had inflicted the injury on herself.

Her brother came to her apartment, saw blood and notified authorities, Mathews said.

Toledo's condition was not immediately available.
