Morgan County Superintendent Bob Balch took the rare step of appointing a search committee to help select a new Eva School principal.

Balch said the committee of four teachers and three parents has interviewed the 12 applicants who want to replace retiring Sheila Burt.

The committee recommended three finalists.

Balch, director of Secondary Education Vicki Smith and Director of Elementary Education Ann Vest will now interview the finalists.

Balch said he plans to make a recommendation at the school board's called meeting May 23 at 10 a.m.

This is the first time a Morgan superintendent used a search committee to help chose a principal since Jeremy Jones was chosen to lead Danville-Neel Elementary in 1998.

Every county elementary school has had at least one change of a principal since the Jones selection.

"This is a big step for the Eva community," Balch said. "And I felt its parents and staff needed to have input into who would be their leader."

Applicants for the position are Vanessa Hayes, science teacher, Union Hill School; Robert Gullion, science teacher, Ryan School; Harvey Bowling, assistant principal, West Morgan High School; Larry Raper, special education teacher, Falkville High School; Patrick Patterson, assistant principal, Brewer High School; Mary Speegle, math teacher, Priceville High School; Gary Linderman, math teacher, Danville High School; Bob Brechtel, history teacher, Sparkman School; Pat Kilgore, physical education teacher, Priceville Elementary School; Jonathan Bragwell, fourth-grade teacher, F.E. Burleson Elementary School; Wanda Doss, assistant principal, Academy of Science and Foreign Language, Huntsville City Schools; and Kay Crocker, first-grade teacher, Priceville Elementary School.
