Technically, 6-year-old Jackson Treadway had a little help saving his little sister from drowning last week.

He just wasn't strong enough to keep both himself and 3-year-old Hailey above the water until Mom joined the rescue.

But he's no less a hero to his mother, Brandi Treadway, 28, who praised him for courage and alertness.

"He's kind of scared of the water, so it was brave of him to jump in and get her," she said.

The three were poolside at their Trinity home when the near-drowning occurred. Treadway was lounging with Hailey in a boat-shaped kiddy pool next to her.

"I was just laying back, and all of the sudden, she was in the pool and I didn't know it," Treadway said. "Jackson just yelled, 'Hailey you're going to drown.' And when I heard him say that, I was up and he jumped in the water."

Jackson said he was just a few feet away from his sister when he saw her walk down the pool stairs after a toy and suddenly found herself submerged in about 4 to 5 feet of water.

A good swimmer

He described himself as a good swimmer in that he's recently learned to swim with his face underwater, but he said the rescue was difficult until his mother joined him.

"She was heavy," Jackson said of his sister.

Treadway said Hailey usually has her floaties on but she took them off and apparently forgot she had removed them when she went into the pool.

"Jackson was going under water trying to hold her up, and he was ducking under water because he couldn't hold her up all the way," Treadway said. "But if he didn't yell out, I wouldn't have known that she wasn't right beside me."

Other than being frightened, Hailey was OK, Treadway said, and is more careful around the pool.
