ATHENS — One person died and another was flown to the hospital after a three-vehicle wreck Friday afternoon at West Elm Street and Edgewood Road.

Sgt. Frank Murphy of the Athens Police Department said Mary Greenhall Elmore, 79, of Edgewood Road in the Cross Key community just north of Athens died in the 12:17 p.m. collision, and MedFlight took her husband, Lester Elmore, age unavailable, to Huntsville Hospital.

Lester Elmore remained in critical condition in the surgical intensive care unit late Friday, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Murphy said the Elmores were traveling south on Edgewood and turning east onto Elm Street when their car and a pickup driven by Michael Gower, age unavailable, of 200 Little River Drive, Huntsville, collided. He said Gower's vehicle then continued in a southwest direction until hitting a sport utility vehicle stopped at the intersection.

Gower and the SUV's driver, whose name was not available, were not injured.
