Classes to teach youths to handle emergencies

Youths can attend Student Emergency Response Training to learn how to respond to an emergency when they are on their own without putting themselves in needless danger.

Classes for students 10 and up will take place June 18-21 in various Decatur locations, said Dianna Tolliver of the Volunteer Center of Morgan County.

Hours will be 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. daily. A disaster simulation will be June 22.

Topics will include putting out small fires, treating life-threatening injuries, basic medical aid, search and rescue, disaster psychology, 911 communication, responder roles and opportunities for youth involvement.

Registration deadline is June 8, and seats are limited. Contact Tolliver at 355-8628.

Partners include the Morgan County Emergency Management Agency and the American Red Cross.
