Adams earns award

Kasondra Adams of East Limestone High School received the Franklin Lenfesty award in chemistry by the chemistry department of The University of North Alabama.

This award is presented to the student with the highest score in the annual High School Chemistry Exam Competition. Adams is the daughter of Cheryl and Robert Adams.

Spears honored

JoAnne Spears, an instructor at Cornerstone Christian School, has been named the Wal-Mart and Samís Club Teacher of the Year for 2007 for the Decatur area. Entries were submitted by students at Cornerstone. She has been in the teaching profession for 37 years.

Spears received a $1,000 grant for programs at Cornerstone.

Bullard in Phi Beta Kappa

Mary Brooke Bullard of Decatur has been elected to Phi Beta Kappa membership. She is majoring in Spanish at Birmingham-Southern College.

Phi Beta Kappa recognizes senior college students who are in the upper 10 percent of their class.

Election is based on academic achievement and demonstration of excellence in the liberal arts and sciences.

NSCC scholarships

These area students received scholarships from Northwest-Shoals Community College.

Pamela Missbach of Town Creek, academic. She is enrolled at Northwest-Shoals, where she is pursuing a degree in business administration.

Chasitey Garner of Town Creek, academic. She is a senior at Hazlewood High School, where she is a member of the Beta Club, scholars bowl team and the Science Club and an honor graduate. She is the daughter of Tara Garner.

Dustin McLemore of Moulton, academic. He is a senior at East Lawrence High School, where he is a member of the Leo Club, Mu Alpha Theta, Science Honor Society and the National Honor Society. He is the son of Kevin and Amy McLemore.

Coloring contest winners

These students from Masterís Hand Christian School were honored at the North Alabama Birding Festival Youth Art/Coloring Contest.

Whitley Fleming, ninth grade, honorable mention. Her parents are Darron and Allison Fleming of Trinity.

Megan Flannagin, fourth grade, second place. Her parents are Anita Hilliard of Hartselle and Timothy Flannagin of Trinity.

Stephenson on deanís list

David D. Stephenson Jr. of Decatur was named to the deanís list at The University of Alabama at Birmingham for the 2007 spring semester. He is the son of David and Glynda Stephenson and a graduate of Decatur High School.

Land elected to SGA

Carson Land of Decatur has been elected secretary of the Student Government Association at Birmingham-Southern College. She is a junior history major and the daughter of Edward and Allyson Land.

Nightingale awards

Wallace State Community College held the pinning ceremony for its nursing students May 10. John Walta Quattlebaum of Hartselle also received the Nightingale Award. Recipients are nominated by the nursing faculty for their dedication to learning, compassion for patients and dedication to nursing.

UWA graduates

These area students received their degrees from The University of West Alabama during spring commencement exercises held May 5.

Samford honorees

These Decatur residents were honored during awards ceremonies at the Samford University School of Business.

Patrick Baggett received a Marlene Mints Reed Scholarship, for Christian character and academic achievement, and a Van Sise Management Scholarship given on the basis of scholarship, character and worthiness.

He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Randy M. Baggett.

Andrew Villarreal also received a Marlene Mints Reed Scholarship and a Thomas D. Russell Scholarship for high achievement and promise. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Villarreal.

Tetzclaff gets scholarship

Katy Tetzclaff of Somerville has been awarded a four-year University of Alabama at Birmingham University Scholars Award.

She is the daughter of Robert and Kathleen Tetzclaff and is a senior at Catholic High School. She is a member of Summa Cum Laude, National Latin Honor Society and the National Honor Society.

Anderson deanís list

Megan Chapman and Rachel Chapman, both of Decatur, have been named to the deanís list at Anderson University, Anderson, Ind., for the 2007 spring semester.

To be eligible for the list, a student must maintain at least a 3.5 grade point average.
