Girls are top anglers at refuge tourney

Girls took six of the top eight trophies at the annual Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge Fishing Rodeo.

Forty-three youths ages 5 to 12 caught a total of 82 pounds of catfish May 5. Trophies were awarded to the child in each age group who had the heaviest stringer at the end of three hours of fishing.

Ten-year-old Danielle Whisenant reeled in the highest total weight with 27.1 pounds of catfish. Twelve-year-old Dillion Whisenant caught the biggest fish at 11.13 pounds.

Some participants shared more than $200 worth of randomly awarded prizes, including fishing poles, tackle boxes and artificial lures. Sponsors were the Wheeler Wildlife Refuge Association, Decatur Bait and Tackle and Pepsi Cola Bottling Co. of Decatur.

The age group winners:

  • 5-year-olds — Trinity Jones, 2.9 pounds.

  • 6-year-olds — Thomas Bunney, 1.6 pounds.

  • 7-year-olds — Emily Myler, 5.7 pounds.

  • 8-year-olds — Megan Moland, 6.6 pounds.

  • 9-year-olds — Destiny Baldwin, 3.6 pounds.

  • 10-year-olds — Danielle Whisenant, 27.1 pounds.

  • 11-year-olds — Malerie Shoenberger, 16.4 pounds.

  • 12-year-olds — Dillion Whisenant, 18.15 pounds.
