Hartselle cuts two teachers, grants tenure to 11 others

HARTSELLE — A unanimous Hartselle school board approved handing out pink slips to two teachers while granting tenure to 11 others.

During a special meeting Monday, the board approved Superintendent William Michael Reed's recommendation to non-renew the contracts of Angie Harris and Anita Quinlivan.

Harris is a temporary teacher at Barkley Bridge Elementary, and Quinlivan is a special education teacher aide at F.E. Burleson.

The board granted tenure to Kelly Meadows and Rhonda Russell, teachers at Barkley Bridge; Earon Sheats at F.E. Burleson; Vicki Blankenship, Jamie Layman, Amy Robinson and Hannah Witt at Crestline; and Jeff Hayes, Randall Key, Suzanne Mizell and Regina Hudson at Hartselle High.

Reed said he wouldn't know if Hartselle will be staffed at the same level until after the Legislature passes the state's education budget.

In other personnel matters on Monday, the board:

n Moved a fourth-grade unit to first grade at Crestline Elementary and a special education teacher unit from Barkley Bridge to the Instructional Resource Center at Hartselle High for the increased enrollment of multi-needs students.

  • Transferred Theresa Thrasher from third-through-fifth-grade special education teacher to kindergarten-through-fifth-grade at Barkley Bridge; Ed Land from library media specialists at Hartselle High to library media specialist at Barkley Bridge; Leesia Johnson from special education at Barkley Bridge to special education teacher at the Instructional Resource Center at Hartselle High; Beverly Spurlin from fourth grade to third grade at Barkley Bridge; Dena Mayfield from fifth grade to second grade at F.E. Burleson; Michelle Kelso from second grade to fifth grade at F.E. Burleson; Jessica Wimberly from fourth grade to first grade at Crestline; Lisa Shelton from second grade to first grade at Crestline; Regina Hames from first grade to second grade at Crestline; Beth Rabb from sixth-grade reading teacher to library media specialist at Hartselle Junior High; Kathy Cheathan from three art I classes, one art II class, one ceramics class and one softball class to four art I classes, one art II class and one graphic design class at Hartselle High; Shannon Coan from two physical science classes and four earth/space science classes to five earth/space sciences and one biology class at Hartselle High; Kristi Greeson from three Spanish I classes and three Spanish II classes to three Spanish I classes, two Spanish II classes and one remediation class at Hartselle High; Erica Griffin from two honors English 10 classes, two English 10 classes and two English 11 classes to two English 9 classes, two Honors English 10 classes and two English 11 classes at Hartselle High; Jeff Hanners, from three world history classes, one U.S. history class and two U.S. history 11 classes to four world history classes and two U.S. history 11 classes at Hartselle High; Tanya Lybarger from two algebra 1A classes, three algebraic connections classes and one athletics class to three algebra 1 classes, two algebraic connections classes and one athletics class at Hartselle High; Donna Legg-Battles from three geometry A classes, two geometry classes and one honors geometry class to three geometry classes, one honors Geometry class and two algebra 1B classes at Hartselle High; Rhonda Miller, from two physics classes, one algebra II/trigonometry class, two algebra 1B classes and one chemistry class to one physics class and five remediation classes at Hartselle High; Suzanne Mizell from three physical science classes and three earth/space science classes to two chemistry 1 classes, three physical science classes and one remediation class at Hartselle High; Nikki Peebles, from four English 9 classes, one English 10 class and one English 12 class to six English 9 classes at Hartselle High; Beth Vest from three English 10 classes and three English 11 classes to six English 10 classes at Hartselle High; Kelly Wade from one honors chemistry class, three chemistry 11 classes and one AP chemistry class to one AP chemistry class; one honors chemistry class, two chemistry 11 classes and one remediation class at Hartselle High; Dennis Willingham, from three American issues classes and three Spanish I classes to one American issues class, three Spanish I classes and two Spanish II classes at Hartselle High; Sonie Wilson from three algebra 1B classes, two geometry A classes and one geometry B class to four geometry B classes and two geometry A classes at Hartselle High; Chad Gladden from one math class, one science class, one government/economics class, one daily living class, one English class and one history class to one math I class, one occupational management class and one daily living skills class at Hartselle High; Jerome Ward, from two honors English II classes, one publication class, two English 101-102 classes and one English 12 class to one publication class, one scholars bowl class, two honors English II classes and two English 101-102 classes at Hartselle High; Regina Hudson from two reading classes, one Spanish II class and three English 12 classes to four English 12 classes, one drama class and one reading class at Hartselle High; Kristy Liverett from two world history classes, one U.S. history II class, two U.S. History 10 classes, and one physical science class to two world history classes, two U.S. history 10 classes, one U.S. history II class and one government/economics class at Hartselle High; Beth Long from two geometry A classes, one algebra 1B class, two algebra 1A classes and one geometry B class to two algebra 1B classes, two geometry A classes and two geometry B classes at Hartselle High.

  • Accepted the resignations of Kimberly M. Pittman, teacher at Hartselle High; Kathy Cheatham, assistant softball coach; Steve Knight, assistant football coach; Sonya Nave, English teacher at Hartselle High; and Regina Anderson, special education teacher at Hartselle High.
