9 apply for magnet school principal position

Decatur City Schools received nine applications for the vacant Leon Sheffield Elementary School principal position.

The candidates want to replace retiring Principal Barbara Sittason as leader of the school systemís third-, fourth- and fifth-grade magnet school.

Superintendent Sam Houston said a committee of Jeanne Payne, supervisor of curriculum and professional development; Yvette Evans, supervisor of federal programs; and Pam Asmann, consultant and former Benjamin Davis Elementary principal, will screen candidates and submit a list of finalists. Houston and Assistant Superintendent Ed Nichols will then interview the finalists. Houston said he hopes to make a recommendation to the school board in June. The board plans meetings June 14, 19 and 21.

The applicants are:

  • Montize Aaron, assistant principal, Bristol Elementary School, Webster Groves, Mo.

  • Rachel Clay, teacher, Somerville Road Elementary School.

  • Shannon Cook, school improvement specialist, Decatur City Schools.

  • Thomas Davis Jr., assistant principal, Cedar Ridge Middle School.

  • Jameha Gardner, reading specialist, Walter Jackson Elementary School.

  • Edith Garner, English teacher, Decatur High School.

  • Danny Patterson, sales, Rustic Heritage, Arab.

  • Rachel Poovey, assistant principal, Oak Park Middle School.

  • Johnnie Renick, interim assistant principal, Brookhaven Middle School.
