Ashville man kills self before facing trial on child enticement charges
ASHVILLE (AP) — A former local youth camp director, who was expected to make his initial court appearance Wednesday to face charges of enticing a 13-year-old boy for immoral purposes, apparently killed himself.
St. Clair County Sheriff Terry Surles said the body of Larry Ray Palmer, 59, of Ashville was found at his residence Tuesday.
Palmer was arrested April 12 and was released shortly afterward, posting a $50,000 bond.
The St. Clair County Baptist Association, who hired him as its interim camp director for Camp SonShine only months before his arrest, reported the allegations to the sheriff's department.
The Baptist Association voted to relieve him of his duties shortly before his arrest.
