7 apply for Decatur special ed supervisor position

Seven people submitted applications to fill the top position in special education for Decatur City Schools.

They want to fill the supervisor of special education position left vacant with the retirement of Bill Gilchrist this month.

Superintendent Sam Houston said he will conduct the interviews with Assistant Superintendent Ed Nichols. He would like to make a recommendation at one of three meetings the Decatur school board will hold in June.

Applicants for the position are:

  • Sametta Brown, teacher, Somerville Road Elementary.

  • Stefanie Underwood, supervisor of Federal Compliance, 504 Special Education and English-as-Second-Language, Decatur City Schools.

  • DeWana Howard, guidance counselor, Brookhaven Middle School.

  • Joe Phillips, special education teacher, Austin High.

  • Cynthia Pollard, speech pathologist, Huntsville City Schools.

  • Brenda Monk, assistant director, learning specialist, Florida State University.

  • Edward Orum, program director, North Central Alabama Mental Retardation.
