Ex-high school football player killed in drive-by in Mobile

MOBILE (AP) — A former Williamson High School football player was killed and a friend wounded in a drive-by shooting in South Mobile, police said.

Demarcus Bettis, 18, and his friend William Worthy, 19, were crossing Michigan Avenue on Friday night when a sport utility vehicle pulled along side of them, said police spokesman Officer Eric Gallichant.

One of the occupants of the SUV fired shots that hit Bettis and Worthy at about 10:45 p.m., Gallichant said.

Both men were taken to University of South Alabama Medical Center, where Bettis later died, Gallichant said. A nursing supervisor declined to release Worthy’s condition Saturday. Gallichant said Worthy’s injuries were not life threatening.

There were no immediate arrests, but homicide investigators do not believe the incident was random.
