Hayden man dies in helicopter crash

BIRMINGHAM (AP) — A Hayden man was killed while attempting to land his helicopter in a pasture near his home, the Blount County sheriff said.

William Gary Latham, 63, was the only person in the 1954 Bell two-seat helicopter when he tried to land less than 100 yards from his home at about 11 a.m. Sunday, Sheriff Danny Morton said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

A witness said wind appeared to tilt the helicopter during the landing, Morton said.

Latham had taken to the air from a trailer parked less than a mile away. He had taken the helicopter for a routine Federal Aviation Administration inspection that cleared it for flight, Blount County Sheriff’s Lt. Larry Dabbs said.

Latham had apparently bought the aircraft recently.
