Firefighters battle Alabama blazes

Firefighters from five counties were battling a wildfire on more than 60 acres in Etowah County east of Attalla on Wednesday, the latest in a string of fires in parched Alabama.

Alabama Forestry Commission officials also said five fires in Elmore County burned 237 acres on Tuesday, and a total of 10 fires on more than 400 acres have hit the county since Friday.

Four of the 10 fires are suspicious because of similarities in the areas and times they occurred, said Mark Sullivan of the commissionís fire division.

Firefighters from at least five volunteer departments and Forestry Commission personnel battled a wildfire Monday in Walker County that destroyed several acres and threatened a number of homes.

Fire officials suspect arson in the blaze, which started between American Junction and Parrish in South Walker County.

All 67 Alabama counties were placed under a fire alert May 18.
