Barbecue to raise funds for Confederate home

ATHENS — The curator of Confederate President Jefferson Davisí Mississippi home will be the guest speaker at an old-fashioned barbecue on the Elk River.

Richard Flowers will talk about the restoration projects under way at Beauvoir.

The Capt. Thomas H. Hobbs Camp No. 768 and Northeast Brigade of the Alabama Division is sponsoring the event Saturday. Proceeds will go to the restoration. Beauvoir sustained damage during Hurricane Katrina.

Cost is $20 per couple, $12 per individual and free for children 16 and under.

Clear Creek will perform bluegrass. Festivities start at 5 p.m. with barbecue beginning at 5:30.

To get to the river site, take U.S. 72 West through Athens to Cox Road at Mount Carmel Church of Christ across from Clements High School. Go north on Cox Road, turn right on Riverside Drive, and you will see the driveway.
