No foul play seen in inmate's death

OPELIKA (AP) — A Lee County Detention Center inmate who was found unresponsive and not breathing in the women's section of the jail Tuesday died after being taken to East Alabama Medical Center.

Jail staff called 911 at 8:15 a.m. when Aisha Safiya Avery of Opelika was found. A detention center staff nurse started CPR while waiting for health and rescue personnel to arrive. Avery was rushed to the emergency room where she was pronounced dead at about 9 a.m. after efforts to revive her were unsuccessful.

No foul play is suspected but the cause and manner of death have not been determined.
