Pre-dawn fire chars Pratt City apartments

PRATT CITY (AP) — Nine people were injured escaping their burning Pratt City apartments, some leaping out of windows as a pre-dawn blaze destroyed eight units in the Timber Ridge complex.

"It just looks like we don't supposed to be living," Beverly Bell said Monday afternoon, her newly broken ankle propped on crushes. "Everything is gone."

Bell and eight other people — seven of them children — were injured escaping early Monday. Authorities said none of the injuries was life-threatening.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue Capt. C.W. Mardis said the cause of the blaze remained under investigation.

Evidence from the scene was turned over to the state Department of Forensic Sciences for examination.

Mardis said it was too soon to say whether arson was suspected.

It took firefighters about one hour to control the blaze.
