Man shot to death inside Birmingham high school

BIRMINGHAM (AP) — A man was shot and killed during a struggle with a security officer at Hayes High School early Tuesday after officials were alerted to a burglary.

Regina Waller, a spokeswoman with Birmingham city schools, said two security officers who were sent to the school because of a possible burglary saw a man leaving through a window about 3 a.m.

As an officer tried to handcuff the man, the suspect turned to attack him, Waller said. The two fell down in a struggle, and the security guard's gun went off.

Alfonzo Turner, 24, of Birmingham underwent surgery at University Hospital but died, said Jay Glass, deputy coroner for Jefferson County.

The security officer was placed on paid leave during an investigation of the shooting.
