Body found in forest identified

TALLADEGA (AP) — A body found in a shallow grave in the Talladega National Forest has been identified as an Anniston man who was reported missing a month earlier.

A couple on a hiking trip made the grisly discovery May 29 when they saw a foot sticking out of the ground along Cheaha Mountain Road.

Talladega County Sheriff Jerry Studdard said the remains were those of Gary Dale Schlichter, 27, whom relatives reported missing April 29 after the spring race at the Talladega Superspeedway that he planned to attend. Schlichter was last seen alive in Anniston the Wednesday before the race.

Studdard said the decomposed body had been place in a shallow grave and covered in lime.
