House committee approves $8.2 billion to fund BRAC
WASHINGTON — A U.S. House committee has approved $8.2 billion for BRAC, including more than $40 million for Alabama.
The House Appropriations Committee approved the Fiscal Year 2008 Military Construction Appropriations Bill, said U.S. Rep. Bud Cramer, D-Huntsville, on Wednesday.
Cramer, a senior member of the Appropriations Committee, said the bill fully funds the Base Realignment and Closure process for 2008.
Included in the bill is $8.2 billion for BRAC’s 2005 recommendations.
This meets the Bush administration’s request for BRAC and provides more than $42.2 million to support related efforts in Alabama.
“North Alabama is set to gain thousands of new jobs and critical defense responsibilities as a result of BRAC,” said Cramer. “This bill puts in place much-needed funding to help communities like ours continue to prepare for the influx of new defense workers.”
The bill now goes to the full House.
