City block damaged by fire in Talladega

TALLADEGA (AP) — Firefighters struggled to contain a fire that heavily damaged an entire city block of Talladega’s historic downtown square Thursday morning.

The fire appeared to have started at York Wireless about 4 a.m., then spread to the Michaels Supply Building next door and the New Pathways drug and alcohol counseling center behind the wireless building, The Daily Home reported. All buildings are expected to be total losses.

Acting Talladega Fire Chief Mark McKleroy said the common roof shared by the York and Michaels buildings, the lack of a firewall between them, and the early morning breeze were the major contributing factors to the fire’s spread.

The cause of the initial blaze was unknown Thursday morning.

The police and fire departments along with the state Fire Marshall’s Office are investigating the fire.
