3M gift adds land to nature preserve

The 3M Foundation recently approved a three-year, $1.5 million grant to The Nature Conservancy’s Alabama chapter. These funds will be used to purchase 1,690 acres in Jackson County that will be added to the Sharp-Bingham Preserve, making it The Nature Conservancy’s largest preserve in Alabama. The land includes this cave entrance. Jim Fincher, site manager for 3M’s Decatur plant, said his company’s commitment to the environment extends beyond Decatur, and the conservancy’s work in the Paint Rock Valley “resonates with our efforts to preserve biodiversity.” Jeff Danter, state director of the conservancy, called the gift “cornerstone support for one of the most important conservation projects in the Southern U.S.”
