Body of drowning victim recovered
SULPHUR SPRINGS (AP) — The body of a Jefferson County man, who drowned in Smith Lake while trying to climb a ladder attached to a swim dock, was recovered 40 feet away from where he went into the water.
The body of Jason Matthew Cannon, 24, of Warrior, was found around 1:15 p.m. Sunday in nearly 70 feet of water. Cannon drowned around 6 p.m. Saturday while swimming at Ryans Creek on Smith Lake in the Sulphur Springs community.
Alabama Marine Police Officer David Cook said there's a possibility Cannon may have been electrocuted when he touched the ladder, which was on the dock at a boat house.
"We won't know for sure until we get the autopsy report," he said.
Cannon's body has been sent to the Alabama Department of Forensics Science to determine an exact cause of death. Divers and underwater cameras were used in the search.
State marine police say there have been 36 fatalities on Alabama waterways so far this year.
