Teen, 14, linked to fire at golf clubhouse
HOOVER (AP) — Police arrested a 14-year-old boy on an arson charge and were investigating other possible suspects Wednesday in a fire that destroyed a country club clubhouse in an upscale suburban neighborhood.
The youth, who lived near Inverness Country Club in Hoover, was being held in a youth detention center. Police said they were unsure of a motive, but they suspect at least one other person was involved.
Officers arrested the teen within hours of the fire, which occurred Monday.
Sgt. Rod Glover said investigators believe arsonists climbed atop the clubhouse to set the fire using an accelerant.
Two firefighters were briefly treated at a hospital for heat exhaustion, and one pulled a muscle in his back, fire officials said.
Despite the fire, the club was open for golfers the morning after the blaze.
