Daily readers support release of man convicted of sex with teen

An overwhelming majority of readers who responded to The Daily's online poll support a Georgia judge's decision to release a 21-year-old man from prison in a highly publicized underage-sex case.

The unscientific poll, which ended at 5 p.m. Wednesday, asked, "Do you agree with Monday's order by a Georgia judge to release 21-year-old Genarlow Wilson from prison in a case involving consensual sex between teenagers?"

Of the 266 people who voted, 221 (83.08 percent) said yes, while only 45 (16.92 percent) said no.

Wilson has served two years of a 10-year sentence for having consensual oral sex with
a 15-year-old girl when he was 17.

The Georgia Legislature has since changed state law to make similar sexual contact with a minor a misdemeanor when the age gap between the participants is so small.

But the change in law did not overturn Wilson's felony conviction.

Wilson remains in prison while the state attorney general seeks an appeal of the judge's decision to void Wilson's sentence.
