‘Red Robber’ remains on run
By Holly Hollman
COURTLAND — A man whom locals are calling The Red Robber or The Red Man still is on the loose after robbing International Credit Union on Friday.
The robber earned those nicknames after the bag of cash he nabbed exploded with red dye.
A dye bomb helps authorities track suspects after a robbery.
The robber was driving a silver Pontiac when the bomb exploded, causing him to nearly crash less than a mile from the credit union. The dye coated him and the inside of the car in red dye. The dye also contains pepper spray.
“A witness said he came out of that car like a bumblebee,” said Lawrence County Sheriff Gene Mitchell.
The robber got back into the car and fled on Lawrence County 150.
Mitchell said Saturday that authorities have received several tips, but none have led to his capture.
Mitchell said the robber likely got the red dye off his skin with soap and water. Cleaning the car, however, is nearly impossible. Not even gasoline will remove the substance from the upholstery or windshield, Mitchell said.
The bank’s surveillance camera shows a black man in his early 20s wearing blue jeans and a hooded sweatshirt, jumping over the counter and taking the bag of cash.
Authorities are not releasing the amount of money he took.
Anyone with information on the robber or the vehicle’s location can call the Sheriff’s Department at 974-2410.
