REID — “Jalon’s not playing anymore” turned a Father’s Day cookout into a panic-stricken gathering.

Courtney Bean, 3, told her mother those words after finding her cousin, 3-year-old Jalon Morgan, face down in an above-ground pool.

Several family members and children were at the home on Brownsferry Road at Miller Road in the Reid community, southwest of Athens. They were grilling hot dogs for Father’s Day. The accident occurred around 1:30 p.m.

Julene Smith, along with Courtney’s mother, Kristina Smith, and Courtney’s father, Michael Bean, performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation on Jalon.

“He wasn’t breathing at first,” Kristina Smith said. “I did compressions. He finally took a breath. Everyone was panicked, so I tried to stay calm. I went and called 911.”

An ambulance took Jalon to Athens-Limestone Hospital. Jalon’s parents called the family from the hospital and said that other than crying, Jalon should be OK.

“Courtney’s a smart little girl,” Kristina Smith said of her daughter. “She was very brave and helped save her cousin.”
