Athens to begin street project

ATHENS — The Athens Public Works Department will begin a street improvement project at Hine and Washington streets Tuesday.

The work includes installation of turn lanes. The project will take about a month to complete.

Expect traffic delays during this work.

Bill Dukes named VP of ARSEA

State Rep. Bill J. Dukes, D- Decatur, was recently appointed vice president-north of the Alabama Retired State Employees’ Association board of directors.

Dukes served five terms as Decatur’s mayor. He left that post for the Alabama House where he is the Legislature’s oldest member.

ARSEA is a 20,500-member
organization dedicated to improving benefits of retired workers.

Man blames wreck on faulty brakes

HARTSELLE — A Hartselle man apparently lost control of his vehicle and hit the Joe Wheeler Electric Corp. building on Sparkman Street.

According to Hartselle police, Billy Jones, 60, told officers he had problems with his brakes and couldn’t avoid the building.

A co-op worker was sitting in her office, but no one was hurt in the accident that happened at about 1 p.m. Monday.
