Alcohol and weeds on Athens agenda

ATHENS — The alcohol vote and a junk and weed ordinance are the highlights of Mondayís Athens City Council meeting. The meeting at the Athens Police Department on Hobbs Street East starts with a 4:30 work session.

The council will consider a resolution setting a referendum for Aug. 14 on legal alcohol sales.

A local resident submitted a petition June 15 with about 1,330 names asking for a recall vote.

The council will vote on a junk, litter, weeds, non-conforming vehicles and related items ordinance.

The new ordinance is to include requiring officers give warning tickets for certain violations.

Council may set hearing on smoking

On Monday at a 7 p.m. work session, the Decatur City Council will discuss setting a public hearing for Aug. 7 on a citywide smoking ban in public places.

District 3 Councilman Ronny Russell is introducing an ordinance at the meeting.

He recently said he is tired of breathing second-hand smoke.

If approved, Decatur would become the 14th Alabama city with an absolute smoking ban.

Mental Health fundraiser Monday

There will be a kickoff fundraiser for the Mental Health Associationís 27th annual walk-a-thon Monday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Morgan County Courthouse.

The event will be in Cotaco Park on the north side of the building.

Teams made up of lawyers and law enforcement officers will sponsor a hotdog lunch in their efforts to recruit people to participate in the walk-a-thon, which is July 26.
