Gray in Phi Theta Kappa

Jennifer Gray of Eva was inducted into the Alpha Chi Tau chapter of Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society at Wallace State Community College.

Eligible students must maintain a grade point average of at least 3.5 and exhibit good moral character and leadership qualities.

She was also named to ďWhoís Who Among Students in American Colleges and Universities.Ē She is the daughter of Virgil and Laura D. Gray.

Spann in Boys State

Lucas Spann of Speake attended the American Legion Boys State at The University of Alabama on June 10-16. He is a rising senior at Speake High School. He is the son of Tina and Greg Spann.

UNA scholarships

These area students received scholarships from The University of North Alabama.

Jade Tarpley of Falkville, Pride of Dixie Band Auxiliary scholarship. She is a member of Alpha Gamma Delta, university program council and the freshman forum. She is the daughter of Mike and Lawara Tarpley.

Timothy Helms Jr. of Trinity, Pride of Dixie Band scholarship. He is a graduate of East Lawrence High School, where he was named Best in Class Drum Major and Best Overall at competitions. He was drum major for two years at East Lawrence. Helms is the son of Timothy and Connie Helms.

Erica Hope Dawson of Town Creek, transfer scholarship. She graduated from Northwest-Shoals Community College with an associate degree in art. She is the daughter of Clyde and Audrey Dawson.

Brittany Grammer of Hartselle, Pride of Dixie Band scholarship. She is a graduate of Hartselle High School, where she was a member of the color guard for the Hartselle High School marching band and a member of the Key Club and Helping Hands. She also received the Presidential Student Service Award for six consecutive years. She is the daughter of Morris and Janie Grammer.

Angela McCarley of Trinity, Pride of Dixie Band scholarship. She is a graduate of East Lawrence High School, where she was a member of the East Lawrence High School marching band. This is her second year as a Pride of Dixie color guard member. She is the daughter of Lloyd and Beth McCarley of Trinity, and Clay and Rhoda Thomas of Florida.

Katherine Purcell of Trinity, Pride of Dixie Band scholarship. She is a graduate of West Morgan High School, where she was a member of the color guard for four years in the West Morgan High School marching band, graduated in the top 10 of her senior class and also received a leadership scholarship to UNA. She is the daughter of Chuck and Deb Purcell.

Owen Whitehurst of Athens, Pride of Dixie Band scholarship. He is a graduate of East Limestone High School, where he played percussion in the high schoolís band. He was section leader and was the Huntsville Youth Orchestra Principal Percussionist. He was involved in seven honor bands and was in all-county for six years. He also received an academic scholarship to UNA. He is the son of Jerry Whitehurst and Lisa Isbell.

William Justin Morgan of Trinity, Pride of Dixie Band scholarship. He is a graduate of West Morgan High School, where he played French horn in the high schoolís band, was drum major for three years and participated in all-district for two years. He was also a member of the Morgan County Honor Band, the National Honor Society, band council and student council. He is the son of Chuck and Lori Morgan.

Elizabeth Cox of Athens, Pride of Dixie Band scholarship. She is a graduate of West Limestone High School, where she was a Girlsí State representative, president of the Spanish club, and member of the Tri-M music honor society. She also received an academic scholarship to UNA. She is the daughter of Jerry and Darian Cox.

Samuel Garrison of Decatur, Pride of Dixie Band scholarship. He is a graduate of Decatur High School, where he played trumpet in high schoolís band, was section leader in marching, concert and jazz bands for two years and was fourth chair in the UNA Honor Band. He was voted Decatur High School most valuable player and was also awarded the certificate of academic excellence for four years. He is the son of Julie McNeese and Kirk Garrison.

Shelton attends NYLC

Will Shelton of Decatur participated in the Junior National Young Leaders Conference, held June 16-21 in Washington, D.C.

He is a student at Decatur Heritage Christian Academy, where he placed second in the Southeast Region Speech Meet.

He is the son of Roger and Amy Shelton. His grandparents are Jimmie McBride, John and Louann McBride, Billy Warren and Nancy Shelton.

NSCC scholarships

These area students have received scholarships from Northwest-Shoals Community College.

Darrius Climons of Hillsboro, performing arts. He is a graduate of East Lawrence High School, where he was a member of Big Brothers/Big Sisters, chorus, band and the Educational Talent Search. He is the son of Mark and Canary Lucious.

Justin Owens of Moulton, academic. He is a graduate of Lawrence County High School, where he was a member of the National Honor Society and Leo Club. He is the son of Anthony and Judy Owens.

Jonathan Hallmark of Town Creek, performing arts. He is a graduate of East Lawrence High School, where he was a member of the honor band, solo and ensemble and received the Best Brass Award. He is the son of Danny and Jennifer Hallmark.

Millwood has 4.0

Alexis Millwood of Decatur has been named to the presidentís list at William Carey College, Hattiesburg, Miss., for the 2007 spring semester.

To be eligible for the list, a student must maintain a 4.0 grade point average.

Mullinax on deanís list

Megan Mullinax of Decatur has been named to the deanís list at Furman University, Greenville, S.C., for the 2007 spring term.

To be eligible for the list, a student must maintain at least a 3.4 grade point average.

Williams on deanís list

Joshua Williams of Decatur has been named to the deanís list at Freed-Hardeman University, Henderson, Tenn., for the 2007 spring term.

To be eligible for the list, a student must maintain at least a 3.4 grade point average.

Bailey attends Girls State

Katlin Bailey of Somerville attended the 2007 session of Girls State, held at Troy University. She is the daughter of Arvil and Selena Bailey.

Her grandparents are Don and Rovine Corder, Harvie Bailey and the late Ruby Bailey. She represented Brewer High School.

Slaughter named to NSHSS

Gage Slaughter of Hillsboro has been named to the National Society of High School Scholars. He is a student at East Lawrence High School and is the son of Ronnie and Amber Slaughter.
