The Decatur Utilities board Wednesday approved the installation of new gas mains to the Princeton Place subdivision, east of Shady Grove Lane Southwest and north of the Deerfoot subdivision.

Danny Hill of Hill Development Co. requested the installation for the developing subdivision to supply gas to the residents.

"We are adding 37 lots in Phase 1, but our initial layout included 197 houses," Hill said.

The availability of gas for Princeton Place is important because the future residents will use gas for water heaters, appliances and logs, he said.

The board also approved the hiring of Paul B. Krebs and Associates for an engineering study. DU is exploring the most cost-effective options for providing sewer service to areas of Southwest Decatur.

Two sections of Southwest Decatur are under examination. The firm will study the area along Beltline Road between Old Moulton Road Southwest and Alabama 20. In addition to this area, the firm will analyze the section of a mile of land extending from the Beltline one mile west along Alabama 24.

The engineering firm will begin the study within a week. Completion will take six weeks.

The city of Decatur asked DU to investigate the cost of constructing a sewer system in this area. According to Stan Keenum, DU interim general manager, the city believes the system would promote future development.
