Need a light?

On Wednesday members of the Decatur Utilities board discussed how residents can add exterior lighting.

Adding lights on your own:

  • The Decatur Police Department recommends mercury vapor lights.

  • The Home Depot, Lowe’s and others carry the mercury vapor lights.

  • Cost ranges from $30 to $64 per light.

    Adding lights through Decatur Utilities:

  • DU can add a 100-watt, high-pressure sodium light on a pole anywhere on a customer’s lawn.

  • Monthly cost of $7.35 per light, if DU does not set a pole.

  • Monthly cost of $8.86 per light, if DU sets a pole.

Adding lights through the Police Department:

  • Contact the Police Department only if the addition of an exterior light will increase the security of a neighborhood.

  • To add lighting, the approval of the Police Department and Mayor Don Kyle is needed.

  • Decatur police approve only 10 percent of exterior lighting requests.

  • Monthly cost of light is $12.24.
