These area students have received scholarships from the University of North Alabama.
Donialle Killen of Moulton, auxiliary band scholarship. She is a graduate of Lawrence County High School, where she was in the top 25 in her class and was a member of the National Honor Society, “Who’s Who Among American High School Students” and the LEO Club. She is the daughter of Renee Killen.
Ashley Halbrooks of Hartselle, transfer academic scholarship. She attended Calhoun Community College, where she was named to the dean’s list. She is the daughter of A.D. and Sherry Halbrooks.
Daniel Smith of Danville, academic. He is a 2006 graduate of Danville High School, where he was a member of the Beta Club, the math team and scholars bowl. He is the son of Lynn and Judy Smith.
Kerby named to Boys Nation
Brandon Kerby of Town Creek is one of 98 high school student representatives chosen to attend the American Legion Boys Nation, to be held July 20-28 at Marymount University, Arlington, Va.
Kerby is one of two delegates selected from Alabama based on leadership skills, academic record and activity at American Legion Boys State. He is the son of Danny and Llesa Kerby.
Nicole Craft of Decatur received the Outstanding Contribution to a Production Award
at the Birmingham-Southern College Honors Day Convocation.
Such awards recognize students who have exhibited outstanding work in art, performance and technical achievement. Craft is a junior majoring in theater arts.
Patriot’s Pen contest
The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4190 and the Ladies Auxiliary announce the Patriot’s Pen Essay Contest for sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade students.
The contest requires a 300- to 400-word essay on the theme “Why I Am an American.” The first-place winner will receive a $10,000 U.S. Savings Bond and a trip to Washington, D.C. Deadline is Nov. 1.
Entries must be turned in to VFW Post 4190, 2309 Veterans Drive S.W. Entry forms are available at area middle schools, or by calling Diann Moore at 351-8929 or 497-7833.
