MOULTON — A string of accidents Monday evening in a small community outside of Moulton sent a family of four and a volunteer firefighter to the hospital.

The first accident occurred when 4-year-old Isiah Johnson sliced off part of his foot in a lawn mower accident at his home in Trinity.

His mother, Amanda Johnson, 31, was taking him to Lawrence Medical Center when their vehicle swerved off the road on Lawrence County 170 at about 9:30 p.m.

Her husband, Jimmie, 38, and 12-year-old son, Jimmie Johnson Jr., were also passengers. The driver was the only one wearing a seat belt, according to state troopers.

The crash ejected the already-injured son from the vehicle. An Air Evac helicopter flew him to Huntsville Hospital, where he remained in a regular room in good condition Tuesday, a hospital spokeswoman said.

The rest of the family was taken to Decatur General Hospital by ambulance.

Firefighter injured

About 10 minutes later, while on his way to the scene of the accident, Chalybeate Assistant Fire Chief Jeff Nicholson was injured in a single-vehicle wreck on Lawrence County 305, about three miles from the first wreck.

I was just responding to the call, driving down (Lawrence County) 305. I was going around the curve, not speeding or nothing, and a dog jumped out of the ditch. I swerved to miss him, overcorrected and flipped the truck over in the ditch, he said.

A fellow volunteer firefighter drove him to Lawrence Medical Center, where he was treated for a laceration to his left elbow and released that evening.
