Athens school buses trying out new routes
ATHENS — If you wonder why school buses will start driving around the city while school is out, there's a good reason.
Athens City Schools Transportation Director Donnie Powers has his bus drivers running their proposed routes in preparation for the school system offering busing for the first time.
The system got seven of its 14 buses Thursday.
The Board of Education is leasing the buses for 122 months through First American Bank for $1,007,748 at 5.05 percent interest.
Once Powers determines the routes, he will send parents material about busing.
The board has changed elementary school starting and ending times to 7:45 a.m. and 2:30 p.m., respectively.
