Tennessee man critical after accident

ATHENS — A Tennessee man is in critical condition at Huntsville Hospital after his pickup flipped in a wreck Friday afternoon on Alabama 251 near Sweetbrier Drive.

Anthony Gene Hobbs, 55, of Pulaski, Tenn., apparently lost control of the vehicle while he was driving west and crossed over the eastbound lane about 5:15 p.m., according to Athens police.

The vehicle knocked down a mailbox, went into a ditch and then flipped multiple times into a residential yard.

The truck hit a large tree in the yard, skinning the bark off about eight feet up the trunk.

The truck struck and broke a smaller tree, also in the yard.

The vehicle came to rest at 5450 Alabama 251 on the other side of the tree, facing eastbound traffic.

Hobbs was taken by MedFlight to Huntsville Hospital by MedFlight where he was being treated Saturday in the Neurological Intensive Care Unit for severe head injuries.
