4 students from area win National Merit awards

Four area students are among the thousands of winners of this year's university-sponsored National Merit Scholarship awards.

The National Merit Scholarship Corp. announced that Deborah Cox and William Shannon of Athens, and Sarah Hand and Andrew Marschner of Decatur are among 2,300 winners of scholarship awards.

Cox attended Athens High School.

Samford University in Birmingham will be sponsoring her scholarship.

Shannon also attended Athens High School.

Auburn University will be sponsoring his scholarship.

Hand attended Decatur High School.

Auburn University will also be sponsoring her scholarship.

Marschner, who lives in Decatur, attended Randolph School in Huntsville.

Vanderbilt University will be sponsoring his scholarship.

The students are eligible to receive between $500 and $2,000 annually for up to four years of undergraduate studies from the sponsoring institu-tion.

The announcement from National Merit Scholarship Corp. did not provide the specific amounts of the scholarships the students were awarded.
