Democrats to meet in Decatur

By M.J. Ellington (334) 262-1104

MONTGOMERY — If you are a Democrat or think you want to be, the Alabama Democratic Party wants to see you at its Morgan County organizational meeting Monday.

The 6 p.m. meeting will be at the Decatur Utilities building, 1002 Central Parkway S.W.

State party Chairman Joe Turnham and the party's North Alabama field organizer, Tina Coggin, will be present.

"We encourage everyone, even if they have never been involved in politics before, to come see what it is all about," Coggin said.

Coggin said the goal of Monday's meeting is to revitalize the county Democratic Executive Committee and establish a strong Democratic club in Morgan County.

'The fun part'

She called the club "the fun part of politics, where people just enjoy being Democrats together." Some club members also help with specific party activities, particularly in election years. Coggin called the club a good way to get an introduction to the political process.

The party also wants to hear from people interested in membership on the county Executive Committee. Alabama Democratic Party spokesman Jesse Matthews said potential committee members need past involvement with the party.

People interested may apply for county Executive Committee membership through an "open call" application process that requires references showing past party involvement.

There is a $10 application fee.

Coggin said county Executive Committee members play an important role in the party on both the county and state levels. Candidates running for county offices must have approval of the county Executive Committee to run as Democrats, she said.
