Target to hire about 180 local employees

Officials with Decatur’s Target store, set to open Oct. 14, will hire about 180 local employees before Sept. 6.

The store kicked off a large-scale hiring campaign Thursday in Decatur, seeking about 30 people with management experience.

Many more than needed applied for the management and department-lead jobs. That campaign is expected to continue through Saturday.

Those interested in applying for non-management positions were turned away and asked to return for a later hiring campaign, Aug. 9-11.

“The turnout has been really good,” said Hugh Davis, a store manager from Huntsville who assisted with hiring Thursday. “It looks like we’ve got a lot of great applicants who will make great leaders.”

Among the applicants Thursday, several boasted years of management experience.

Connie Battles of Falkville said she worked in retail for more than 20 years before a death in her family forced her to quit her job.

Now, with a 17-year-old son and no insurance, she says she hopes to make a new career at Target.

“I’m a hard worker, so maybe I’ll be set for the rest of my life,” she said. “If I get it, I get it. If I don’t, I don’t.”

Battles says she has followed the progress of the new store for several months, waiting to apply.

With the store set to open just in time for the Halloween and Christmas shopping seasons, Hughs said new employees will work on fixture layouts Sept. 6-8 and begin stocking shelves by Sept. 10.

Located at the southeast corner of U.S. 31 and Alabama 67, the 127,000-square-foot Target will anchor The Crossings of Decatur, a more than 260,000-square-foot shopping center.

Other retailers set to open at the site include Old Navy, Hibbett Sporting Goods, Ross Dress for Less, PetSmart, Lifeway Christian Store, Panera Bread Company, Nails First, rue21 and Rack Room Shoes.

According to a spokesperson for GBT Realty Corporation, which is developing the shopping center, most stores will open with Target on Oct. 14.
