ATHENS — A thief cut a lock on a heavy-duty toolbox and got away with more than $6,700 in construction tools from the new Walgreens site in Athens.

Walgreens is under construction on Hobbs Street at U.S. 31.

The theft occurred Tuesday night or Wednesday morning.

The thief or thieves took lasers, including one worth $4,000, as well as drills, saws, wire, tape measures, utility knives and other tools.

The stolen items totaled $6,766.

Police Lt. Floyd Johnson said the items were locked in a rolling toolbox that weighs several hundred pounds.

“They couldn’t just take off with the toolbox, so they had to break into it,” Johnson said.

Anyone who saw suspicious activity at the construction site can call police at 233-8700.

Walgreens is adjacent to McDonald’s.
