Education In Brief

Man, son earn degrees

On May 12, an area father and son each received graduate degrees during spring commencement exercises at The University of Alabama.

Thomas N. Thrasher Sr. received his Doctor of Education degree in Instructional Leadership. His dissertation, “Secondary School Mathematics Tournament Participants’ and Non-Participants’ Attitudes toward Mathematics,” has been nominated for an Outstanding Dissertation award by the College of Education. Thrasher also holds undergraduate education degrees from Alabama and a Master of Education degree from Alabama A&M University. He is assistant principal at Monrovia Elementary School. He and his wife, Jerretta, reside in Decatur.

Thomas N. Thrasher Jr., formerly of Decatur, received his Master of Business Administration degree. He also holds a degree in electrical engineering from The University of Alabama in Huntsville. He is a graduate of Austin High School and works at Redstone Arsenal. He and his family reside in Madison.

Harrison gets scholarships

Grace Harrison of Hatton has been awarded the Valedictorian Scholarship and Lady Lions’ Basketball Manager’s Scholarship to The University of North Alabama.

She is a 2007 graduate of Hatton High School, where she carried a 4.0 grade point average, was a member of the Beta Club, a Junior Civitan, a Junior Civitan Essay Winner, attended The University of Alabama Journalism Scholarship Summer and Girls State, and was a Wendy’s Heisman Scholarship nominee.

She is the daughter of Wade and Rheta Harrison. Her grandparents are Willard and Margie Hagood and the late Vernon and Irene Harrison.

Davis on honors list

Stephanie Kay Davis of Decatur has been named to the presidential honor roll at The University of Alabama at Birmingham for the 2007 spring term. To be eligible for the list, a student must
maintain at 4.0 grade point average.

Davis also received her bachelor’s degree in early childhood education at the May 5 commencement exercises. She is the daughter of Bill and Sharon Davis.

Elliott honored

Charles Bennett Elliott of Decatur was among Western Carolina University graduate students who were honored for participation in research exhibitions during the 2006-07 school year.

Elliott was enrolled in the graduate program in psychology and presented his work at the Graduate Research Symposium.

Elliott is the son of Charles and Sherry Elliott of Decatur, and is a 2002 graduate of Austin High School.

Judson graduates

These area students received degrees from Judson College at the summer commencement on June 23.

Ashley Clemons of Somerville; Nicole Last of Moulton; Patricia Auch of Athens.

Clemons received the Criminal Justice Award at the spring honors convocation.

Last received the History Award, was named to the spring dean’s list and shared the Scholarship Award at commencement with two other students for having the highest academic standing in the senior class.

Ravipati receives degree

Prasanth Ravipati of Decatur has received his degree from Oxford College of Emory University, Atlanta. His degree was conferred at the May 14 commencement ceremony.

He is the son of Mahipal and Lakshmi Ravipati.

Vanderbilt graduates

These area students received their degrees from Vanderbilt University at the school’s May 11 commencement exercises.

VFW essay contest

The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 4190 and the Ladies’ Auxiliary will hold the Patriot’s Pen Essay Competition for students in grades six through eight. Students will write a 300-400 word essay on the theme “Why I Am an American Patriot.”

Deadline for entries is Nov. 1.

Chestnut Grove pre-K

Chestnut Grove Elementary School will hold registration for pre-kindergarten on Aug. 8-9 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The program is open to all residents of Alabama. Enrollment will be by lottery and will be held Aug. 14 at 4 p.m.

Parents must have their children’s certified birth certificate, Social Security card, updated immunization card and a current utility bill for proof of residence to register.

The program fee is $25 per week.

West Morgan permits

West Morgan School will sell lockers and parking permits Thursday and Friday and July 30. Lockers are $8 and parking permits are $5. Driving students must bring their driver license, proof of insurance and car tag number. All students will get their class schedules in homeroom on the first day of school, Aug. 6.

High school times are: seniors, Thursday, 8 a.m.; juniors, Thursday, 1 p.m.; sophomores, Friday, 8 a.m.; freshmen, Friday, 1 p.m.

Middle school: Eighth grade, July 30, 8 a.m.; seventh-graders, 10 a.m.; sixth-graders, 1 p.m.

Fifth-grade orientation will be Aug. 5 at 2 p.m. Lockers will be available then for fifth-graders.

Teacher Appreciation Day

Staples is hosting a Teacher Appreciation Day at its Decatur store, 817 Beltline Road S.W., and at 1036 U.S. 72 E. in Athens on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The first 200 teachers visiting the stores will receive a Staples polybinder that will include a legal pad, paper clips, highlighters and index flags, other back-to-school accessories and discount coupons.

Teachers can also preview new products and learn about the Staples Copy and Print Center and enroll their school in Recycle for Education at www The program donates $3 for every eligible ink or laser toner cartridge collected.

Teachers can also enroll in Staples Teacher Rewards. From July 15 through Sept. 15, every $1 members spend will count as $2 toward earning rewards. Members also get 20 percent back in Copy and Print Center purchases.
